Guide: Maritime Stories, Art Rooms & Independent Stages
Ten museums, galleries and stages connect Falmouth’s maritime history with its working arts scene. Free collection visits sit alongside date-specific gigs, cinema and performances; check the programme where the experience depends on a booked event.
- National Maritime Museum CornwallExplore model boats, harbour views and the underwater Tidal Zone at the National Maritime Museum, spread across five floors. It is a useful indoor family anchor when sea trips are cancelled, with return visits allowed under the museum ticket’s terms.
- Pendennis CastleWalk the Pendennis headland between Tudor defences and later gun batteries, then investigate the wartime rooms and tunnels. Much of the appeal lies outdoors, so bring a layer and select an operating date in the castle’s booking calendar.
- Falmouth Art GalleryFalmouth Art Gallery offers free changing displays in the Municipal Buildings, drawing on a collection that includes Henry Scott Tuke, automata and surrealism. Bank holidays and exhibition installations can interrupt normal access, so use the current exhibition notice.
- The PolyThe Poly carries the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society’s nineteenth-century arts tradition into independent cinema, performances, talks, exhibitions and pottery. Pick a specific programme item: film tickets, gallery visits and making sessions have different admission arrangements.
- Beside The WaveBeside The Wave shows contemporary Cornish landscape painting alongside ceramics and jewellery on Arwenack Street. Changing exhibitions make it a focused stop for seeing how local artists interpret the coast, with original work available to buy.
- Otte GalleryOtte represents Cornwall-based contemporary artists in painting, drawing, ceramics and sculpture at its High Street gallery. It makes a manageable browse between other town stops, but the entrance does not provide step-free access.
- Sailor's Jail GallerySailor’s Jail uses a former seventeenth-century jail on Quay Street for alternative art, original prints and ceramics. The mix favours approachable collecting rather than a formal museum visit; workshops have separate dates and booking requirements.
- Old Town Hall GalleryThe Old Town Hall Gallery fills a listed High Street building with art and antiquities spanning ancient and modern cultures. Entry is free, and sales of Whirligig cards and prints help fund acquisitions, giving the collection an unusual independent footing.
- The Cornish BankThe Cornish Bank turns a former Church Street bank into a grassroots stage for folk, alternative, electronic and international music. Choose a dated gig from its own calendar; the downstairs Touc Inn pub is a separate part of the visit.
- Princess PavilionPrincess Pavilion’s Edwardian complex hosts touring concerts and theatre beside the bandstand and gardens. Book the particular performance rather than expecting general show access, and note that the whole site closes for event preparation on 31 October 2026.
