Best Things to Do in Falmouth
Guide: Beaches, Paddleboards, Harbour Boats & History
These ten outings combine beaches and gardens with guided history, pottery, the castle and time on the water. Build the day around the actual ferry or activity calendar, leaving indoor options for rough weather.
- National Maritime Museum CornwallExplore model boats, harbour views and the underwater Tidal Zone at the National Maritime Museum, spread across five floors. It is a useful indoor family anchor when sea trips are cancelled, with return visits allowed under the museum ticket’s terms.
- Pendennis CastleWalk the Pendennis headland between Tudor defences and later gun batteries, then investigate the wartime rooms and tunnels. Much of the appeal lies outdoors, so bring a layer and select an operating date in the castle’s booking calendar.
- Gyllyngvase BeachGyllyngvase’s broad sand has a café, toilets and an accessible approach, making it a practical beach base close to town. Swimming still depends on conditions; the 2026 RNLI patrol season ended in September, before this guide’s October check.
- Swanpool BeachSwanpool combines a sand-and-shingle cove with a lagoon nature reserve behind it and coast-path walking beyond. A café and watersports hire extend the outing, but there is no RNLI lifeguard patrol and summer dog restrictions apply.
- Falmouth Uncovered — History TourFalmouth Uncovered’s ninety-minute history walk starts at the Grove Place toilets and finishes by Prince of Wales Pier. Book for local stories along a roughly 1.5-kilometre route; steep ground and stairs make this particular tour unsuitable for wheelchairs.
- AK Wildlife CruisesAK explores the coast aboard the Spirit of our Seas catamaran from Premier Marina, offering cruises of several lengths. The WiSe-accredited operation looks for seals, dolphins and seabirds without guaranteeing sightings; sea conditions control departures.
- Blü Paddle CoBlü Paddle Co runs paddleboard lessons, tours and hire from Gyllyngvase Beach, including early-day sessions when scheduled. Reserve through its booking calendar and leave flexibility: the season, sea state and weather decide which sessions can go ahead.
- Star Glazers Pottery Painting CafeStar Glazers lets you paint a ceramic blank for firing in its licensed High Street café. Book a table and arrange collection of the finished piece; adult evening sessions and the extra late-year nights have their own calendar.
- St Mawes Ferry — Prince of Wales PierTake the St Mawes Ferry from Prince of Wales Pier across Carrick Roads for a village outing on the opposite shore. The route runs year-round, but dated timetables, tides, weather and live service status control the actual sailing choice.
- Gyllyngdune GardensGyllyngdune’s restored gardens connect flower beds, a shell grotto and a monolithic arch with the Pavilion bandstand and seafront path. Entry is free; daylight and performance schedules shape access, with a full-site closure on 31 October 2026.
