Koh Tao’s granite shoreline changes character from the open east-coast bays to small southern coves and the sandbar at Nang Yuan. Snorkeling and short climbs reward close attention to wind, tide and the rules of privately managed access.

Tanote Bay surrounds a sandy east-coast beach with large granite boulders and accessible reef edges. Snorkeling begins close to shore, but the open bay can receive swell when the west coast is calm. Assess the water before entering and give arriving boats room.
Aow Leuk has a broad sandy entry and shallow reefs along both sides of its east-coast bay. Access crosses managed land, with an entrance charge and rules about bringing food and drinks. Clear water makes the reef rewarding without a long swim, provided the sea is settled.
Shark Bay has a pale southern shoreline where green turtles and blacktip reef sharks are sometimes seen over the shallows. Sightings are never assured, and swimming toward animals spoils the encounter. Beach access passes through different resort routes, so charges and access conditions depend on the entrance.
Freedom Beach is a small southern cove shaded by trees and edged with granite. Its sheltered-looking water and nearby coastal paths make a compact beach visit possible, but the ticketed access also serves neighbouring viewpoints. Bring shoes for the rocky sections rather than relying on beach sandals.
Sai Nuan’s first beach is a small southwest pocket of sand backed by palms and simple bungalows. The coastal walk from Mae Haad is more appealing than the steep road approach for confident walkers. Nearshore rocks provide snorkeling when the water is calm; carry cash for managed beach access.
Hin Wong is a rocky northeastern cove with a small beach, huge granite boulders and reef fish close to shore. Local businesses rent snorkeling equipment and kayaks. The road from Sairee is steep, and the tiny strand gives less room to spread out than Tanote.
John-Suwan’s rocky summit looks across both Chalok Baan Kao and Shark Bay, exposing the island’s narrow southern peninsula. The climb is short but steep, with ropes on awkward sections. Wear shoes with grip and avoid the ascent when rain makes the granite slippery.
Koh Nang Yuan joins three rocky islets with a narrow sandbar, with snorkeling at Japanese Gardens and a short climb to the viewpoint. Day visitors are admitted from 10:00 to 15:00 and pay an entrance fee. Fins, drones and single-use plastic bottles are prohibited by the island operator.
